There are many cloth diapers on the market nowadays. Reusable diapers can be roughly divided into four different systems, that all have their pros and cons. AIO cloth diapers are true all-in-one diapers. They are one piece diapers, which makes them look most like disposable diapers. They are trim, usually adjustable in size and suitable for newborn babies as well as toddlers. All-in-one diapers do tend to be quicker to leak than other systems. A diaper system that is less prone to leakage is the pocket diaper. This washable cloth diaper has a pocket opening at the front and/or back in which you can put different inserts. This gives you the possibility to adjust the absorbency easily. When the inserts are put inside the diaper, the diaper is as easy to put on as a disposable diaper. It has become a one piece diaper! Both AIO and pocket diapers have to be entirely washed after usage. This is different for the SIO system, the snap-in-one diaper. This type of reusable diaper consists of covers with snap-in inserts. With each diaper change, you can remove soiled inserts and wash them, and then you can snap clean inserts into the cover. This means that you do not have to wash the covers every single diaper change. The most leak free diaper is the fitted diaper. The fitted diaper needs to be used with a water resistant diaper cover. The combination of a fitted diaper with a cover is called a two-part system. Fitted diapers are great nighttime cloth diapers thanks to their level of absorbency. For older babies that sleep longer at night and/or pee a lot there are specific nighttime diapers on the market. They can absorb more than regular disposable diapers.
Cloth diapers need to be washed. Or better yet: can be washed. This means that you only need 24 diapers that you can use over and over again! This not only saves the planet, but also saves you money. Washing cloth diapers is not so hard. Poop can be caught on a special, biodegradable insert for cloth diapers. When it is soiled, you throw it away. If it only got wet, you can usually wash the insert with your diapers and reuse it. Dirty bamboo and cotton diapers can be collected in a diaper bin or wet bag until laundry day. On laundry day, you put the diapers and the wet bag or mesh bag into the washing machine and start a cold rinse with a small amount of laundry detergent. This rinse cycle removes most of the dirt before the main/long cycle. We recommend choosing a main cycle of 60 degrees Celsius. Then, line dry the diapers, preferably across two lines. This not only makes them dry faster, but also keeps the leg elastics in a better shape.
Washable cloth diapers increase your child’s awareness of bodily functions. Often children who have been cloth diapered are potty trained at an earlier age. For children that are almost potty trained, but not quite there yet, there are reusable cloth training pants available. These training pants can be put on and taken off by your child, like underwear. Cloth training pants are not very absorbent and are only suitable for children that only need some extra protection when they are not on time to make it to the toilet or potty. For children that prefer to put on and take off their own pants, but still need quite a lot of absorbency, there are also reusable pull up cloth diapers available that meet their needs.
