Menstrual Cups

What is a menstrual cup?

What is a menstrual cup?

Menstrual cups are the sustainable alternative to (disposable) tampons. You insert a cup into your vagina, where it collects the menstrual blood. The cups are generally made of medical silicone and do not adversely affect the mucous membranes of your vagina. Because the moisture is collected instead of absorbed, the mucous membranes do not dry out and there is less chance of irritations and infections. In addition, bacteria cannot adhere to the smooth material of a cup. Cups come in many shapes and sizes, from soft to somewhat stiffer, from small to large and often also in different colors and shapes.

Alternative to menstrual pads and tampons

Cups absorb more moisture than reusable tampons can absorb. They are therefore ideal if you are away from home for a long time or while working. They are also very suitable for swimming and sports. You can wear a cup for up to 12 hours in a row and can also be used at night. Menstrual cups can also be combined with menstrual underwear or reusable cloth pads on days when you need some extra protection.

The advantages:

A menstrual cup is healthier and better for the environment and the wallet. A cup is healthier because it collects the menstrual blood instead of absorbing it. In this way, the mucous membrane does not dry out and there is less chance of irritations and infections. A cup is better for the environment, because it can be used again and again. It is therefore a good alternative to disposable tampons. A cup is good for the wallet, because it lasts for several years. Although a menstrual cup is more expensive to purchase, you more than earn it back because you save the monthly costs of disposable menstrual products.

Determine menstrual cups size

Cups come in many shapes and sizes. You have extra soft or extra stiff cups, you have cups for a low or high cervix, you have cups that collect little or a lot of fluid and you can often choose colors!
When choosing the right cup, your body type, position of the cervix, the firmness of your pelvic floor muscles and the sensitivity of your vagina are important factors. If you have a fine physique and/or if you have not given birth, a small cup is often suitable. There is even a special teenage cup for teenagers. This is a bit smaller and has an average hardness. If you quickly feel a cup in place, an extra soft cup is often very pleasant. A soft cup is also useful if you have weak pelvic floor muscles. If you have very strong pelvic floor muscles, a firm cup is often better. If you lose a lot of blood, you can opt for a slightly larger cup capacity.
